Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit a unique combination of electrical, thermal, optical and mechanical properties, which make them suitable candidate material for a wide range of applications, such as in electronics (i.e. supercapacitors, nano-transistors), devices (i.e. gas sensors, probes), biomedical applications (i.e. tissue engineering, drug delivery systems), energy and environment (i.e. fuel cells, wind turbines). CNTs are widely used in composite materials (i.e. reinforcement of polymeric, ceramic or other type of matrices, conductive polymers, separation membranes, catalyst and catalytic substrates, fabrics, coatings (antistatic, conductive, anticorrosive), flame retardants, insulation materials, nanowires and sporting goods).
The entrance of such applications in the market depends on several parameters, the most important of which is the final cost of the product. For this reason, the large scale production of high purity, low cost CNTs is a field of high interest for the nanomaterials manufacturers.
In this work, an overview of the production and functionalization of high purity MWCNTs is presented, so as to be used in a wide range of applications. Details on the special characteristics of the selected CNTs are given, along with the studies regarding the optimized dispersion of these materials in the host matrix. Moreover, specific examples of the use of different types of CNTs as additives in the construction sector, bioapplications, textiles' industry and as coatings are given.
