PhD Studies

The Programme of Doctoral Studies of the Department of Materials Science is organized and operates in accordance with the provisions of Law 4485/2017, and other applicable legal provisions and decisions.

Doctoral studies aim to produce high-quality and up-to-date scientific research, as well as training scientists capable of contributing to the advancement and progress of science and research.

Graduates of doctoral programs are intended to staff research, business and educational potential of the country and abroad. At the same time, the doctoral program is a source of academic prestige and international academic excellence for the Department, as well as for the University in general, and contributes to the qualitative and quantitative enhancement of research output.

The minimum qualifications for doctoral candidates are:

  • University Degree (University or TEI) from a Greek Institution or from a recognized as an equivalent institution of a foreign country.
  • Postgraduate Diploma (Master of Science) from a Greek higher education institute or from a foreign institution recognized by the Hellenic NARIC (DOATAP) as an equivalent accredited, or, an integrated Master, in accordance with article 46 of Law 4485/2017.

The minimum duration for obtaining their Doctoral Degree may not be less than three (3) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the three-member Advisory Committee.

In exceptional cases, such as the candidate's proven long-term professional or research experience in subjects related to Materials Science, and after a justified decision by the Department's Assembly, a non-MSc holder may be accepted as a PhD candidate.

Graduates of TEI, ASPΕΤΕ or equivalent schools can only be accepted as PhD candidates if they hold an MSc.

For PhD candidates who do not hold an MSc, the minimum duration for supporting their PhD thesis is set to 4 years. Also, the Department Assembly may set the candidates the requirement to complete a number of postgraduate courses. The attendance time of these compulsory courses counts towards the minimum time required to obtain the Doctorate.
