PHOS & ZOE (Light & Life) event celebrated the UNESCO proclamation of the "International Year of Light 2015"

 

phos zoe bridgeWith a great success the PHOS & ZOE (Light & Life) event celebrated the UNESCO proclamation of the “International Year of Light 2015 (IYL2015)”, on Tuesday, 8th December 2015, at the University of Patras, Greece, with the participation of eminent personalities from the world of sciences and the arts.
The event focused on the three dimensions of “Light” and its significance for the human life, with keynote presentations by the renown Professors Giannis Manetas, Dept Biology Univ. Patras: “Photosynthesis: the history of a global evolutionary good”, Iakovos Potamianos, School of Fine Arts, Aristotle Univ of Thessaloniki: “Light and Art”, and Mikhail Zervas, Optoelectronics Research Centre, Univ. of Southampton: “Photonics: the revolution carries on”.
In an act of symbolism of the “light of knowledge” and the human achievements, green laser beams inscribed the dark sky of Rion, focused on the pylons and lighted up the bridge “HARILAOS TRIKOUPIS”.
The event was organized by the research units of the Nanophotonics Network: “Photonic materials, structure & devices”-Dept. of Materials Science (resp. Prof. N. Vainos) and “Laser, Nonlinear and Quantum Optics” -Dept of Physics (resp. Prof. S. Couris), under the auspices of the Research Committee of the Univ. of Patras, the support of GEFYRA LITOURGIA SA, and the kind sponsorship of TITAN CEMENT INDUSTRY, INTERLAB, OPTRONICS Technologies, and VECTOR Technologies.
